Following his collegiate career, Barrera had a stint playing with the Ventura County Fusion (USL 2), soon after that he joined Cal United Strikers FC for NISA’s Inaugural Season where he earned himself player of the week honors in his debut match along with helping the team win NISA’s West Coast Championship (2019).
Following high school at Long Beach Millikan, Steven moved on to play four years at Cal State Los Angeles.
At Cal State Los Angeles from 2013-18, Barrera helped the Golden Eagles’ defense that won California Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) Championships in 2013 and 2018 as well as a NCAA West Region title in 2014. In 2018, Barrera was the CCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player after leading the Golden Eagles to the conference tournament championship, as he also earned All-Conferences and All-Region honors. In his senior season for the Golden Eagles, he recorded 10 shutouts with a goals against average of 0.83 and with a saves percentage of .817, making 85 saves on the season.

His parents are Hector and Laura Barrera. He has a sister named Stephanie and a brother named Nicholas.
When he has free time, Barrera enjoys hanging out at the beach, spending time with his family and studying the art of goalkeeping in soccer. He is passionate about the craft and hopes to pass on all he learns to the next generation.
